How does the challenge work?

add remove

Once registered for Canteen's Five Peaks Virtual Challenge, you will receive a fundraising and training guide. That being said, the easiest way to describe this challenge is in three easy steps.

  1. Register for the challenge - it's FREE
  2. Share your commitment with your friends and family asking them to sponsor you in the challenge
  3. Walk, run, or roll 68km in March - the combined trail distance of Australia's five highest peaks!

Once complete, all that's left to do is to celebrate your impact on the lives of young people impacted by cancer!

Who can participate in the challenge?

add remove

Anyone can participate in the challenge, however, we recommend you consult with a doctor before any significant changes to your exercise levels.

Do I have to climb five mountains?

add remove

No! You don't have to climb any, but we won't stop you if that’s your thing. Choose to run, walk, roll, ride or swim (whatever you like) 68km in March — the combined trail distance of the tallest five mountains in Australia.

All support services are underpinned by Canteen’s research and evaluation team who conduct world-class psychosocial research with the ultimate goal of transforming the lives of young people affected by cancer.

Canteen was set up by a group of young cancer patients in 1985 and is one of Australia's leading cancer organisations where young people still guide the organisation at every level.

FUNDRAISING

Where do donations go?

add remove

Funds raised go towards developing and maintaining peer support programs and events, 24/7 online communities for young people and parents, access to Canteen’s free counsellors and individual support, specialist medical treatment and support for youth cancer patients in hospital, help post-treatment to get back on their feet, and youth-specific resources to guide young people through the challenges of cancer.

How can I get donations?

add remove
The number one reason why people donate to charities is because they were asked – so don’t be afraid of asking!

Tell your friends and family why the cause is important to you and remind them that every dollar counts – all funds raised will go towards supporting young people impacted by cancer (find out more here).

Many workplaces also offer dollar matching, so it’s worth asking your boss if this is something they can do.

We're here to help! The best way to receive donations is to share your fundraising page. Every time you share your page, you increase the number of opportunities people have to support you (and young people impacted by cancer). Please consider sharing your fundraising page by:

  • Posting on your socials
  • Sending messages (eg SMS or WhatsApp)
  • Emailing your friends, family and/or colleagues

Are there incentives for fundraising?

TEAMS

Can I register as a team?

add remove

Yes, absolutely. We actually encourage it!

Apart from being good fun, getting physical as a group will provide great motivation. It will help you climb towards each peak because everyone is doing it! If you're competitive, make it a race across Australia's five highest peaks!

It’s also a nice way to socialise. When deciding between exercise or catching up with friends and colleagues, you can now do both!

While registering, you can create a team for your friends, workplace or family or join an existing team. Once your page is live you'll be able to invite others.

How do I invite someone to my team?

add remove

Once you've registered and created your team, others can join your team by clicking the JOIN US link on your team fundraising page. We have also created an email you can send to your contacts - access this email under the GET SUPPORT option on your team dashboard.

Can people donate to my team as a whole?

add remove

Yes! Donations can be made to the team, supporting all members of your team, or to individual fundraisers. All funds raised by your team members will be tallied into your team's total.
