Five Peaks Virtual Challenge

During the month of March I will be participating in Canteen's Five Peaks Virtual Challenge...

… It is a month-long challenge to cover 68km of exercise across March, which is the combined trail distance of Australia’s five highest peaks.

Every year, 23,000 young Australians face the mountain that is a cancer journey. Whether facing their own cancer diagnosis, or dealing with a loved one’s cancer journey, climbing that peak means feeling isolated, lost, exhausted, and confused.

It’s terrifying, and no one should face it alone. That’s why I’m challenging myself and I need your support!

Please sponsor me today and make every km count! All funds raised will help young people, facing their hardest climb, get free access to Canteen’s cancer counselling, peer support and specialised in-hospital care.

I am participating in this challenge in memory of my dad who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2017.

Thank you for your support!

My Updates

Days 15-16

Saturday 15th Mar
As I reach the halfway point of this challenge I find myself waylaid in pain after a large mole removal, I will return to exercising as soon as I can - I feel this is a suitable photo, sadly a baby tree lost to the winds of Cyclone Alfred

Day 14

Saturday 15th Mar
A mixed day - 2.4km walking in the morning then in the afternoon I needed to have a large keratosis removed from the side of my chest

Day 13

Thursday 13th Mar
An invigorating 4.75km morning walk plus around 0.25km walking around my unit as I organized items to go to the tip for recycling. There are such beautiful parks in suburbia, we are very blessed!! I was greeted by four magpies sitting on the fence when I arrived home

Days 11-12

Thursday 13th Mar
Incidental exercise walking around my unit as I moved items back into place that had been moved to safety in anticipation of Cyclone Alfred. After accidentally locking myself out one morning I decided to spend that afternoon painting as a mindful anxiety-reducing activity. I painted a Nightmare Before Christmas themed painting for the lovely neighbour who took me in while I waited for my wonderful son to bring over the spare key to let me in.

Day 10

Wednesday 12th Mar
I was motivated to exercise even within the confines of my unit - 1km walk (10 circuits of my unit) and 6km on the exercise bike where there was still beauty to see - and yay I virtually conquered Mount Kosciuszko

Days 7-9

Wednesday 12th Mar
Fairly sedentary during confinement at home due to Cyclone Alfred - on Friday 07 March I baked 100 cookies to ease my stress and gave most away to neighbours, I had fun with the doorbell cam while it was inside and upside down on a bedroom door, the fencing around the balcony was blown about a bit but was fixable

Day 6

Thursday 6th Mar
Four sweaty hours were spent walking around moving items either to a more secure location on my balcony or to the front bedroom, much to Scarlet's delight having her favourite balcony items inside, I think she has lain on all of them so far - sunset today was a mere sputter on the horizon, now bracing for the expected winds from Cyclone Alfred

Day 5

Thursday 6th Mar
I had a lot of walking around the shops today with, what felt like, half of Brisbane purchasing necessities for expected power outages from the winds of Cyclone Alfred - I did manage to purchase all I had planned to except for a portable radio, my bonus score was the very last Bar-B in a box from Bunnings (a just-in-case item)

Day 3

Thursday 6th Mar
No set exercise today, just incidental walking - I had a delightful visit with my brother Cameron and niece Kayla and her partner Kyle, I'm sharing a photo of the beautiful view from the apartment they are staying in, sadly the Green Day concert they were going to attend was cancelled due to Cyclone Alfred

My first milestone has been achieved

Tuesday 4th Mar
I virtually conquered my first peak today - Mount Ossa, the highest mountain in Tasmania - I walked and swam 0.5km in the pool today

Day 2

Sunday 2nd Mar
I walked just under 2km during an early morning walk around my neighbourhood, there were so many beautiful flowers to be seen 💐

Day 1

Saturday 1st Mar
A delightful 2.5 km walk at the Botanical Gardens at Mount Coot-tha - a dragonfly joined me for part of my walk, there was beautiful artwork around the walking trails, so much beautiful flora and fascinating fauna, and I came across the bonsai display
